Accessible Housing
If you have a disability and would like to live independently, the house hunting journey begins but finding the right home for you can be challenging. It is important to live in a home that is safe, comfortable and accessible.
There are different accommodation options including accessible housing, designed for people who require step-free and barrier-free access such as wheelchair users; adaptable housing, designed to be easily adapted to meet the changing needs of its occupants, and modified housing which has some modifications already completed and available for use, such as an access ramp or bathroom alterations.
You may also be eligible to access home modifications through the National Disability Insurance Scheme or the Government may help by covering the costs of home modifications to ensure you can live safely and independently in your home. These could include minor modifications like the installation of handrails, inside ramps, sliding doors and lever tapes, or major modifications such as outdoor ramps, lowering of benches and cupboard and accessibility modifications to the bathroom and laundry areas.
